GRID was invited to Shimoga City to conduct to facilitate three training programmes in April 2023. A brief report of the programmes is included here.

1. Soft Skills for Career Enhancement for Youth

Soft Skills Sessions for Career Enhancement were facilitated by GRID for the SSLC passed out students of the Diocese of Shimoga on 18 & 19 April 2023. The teenagers comprising 130 boys and girls had assembled for a four-day residential camp DIKSUCHI in preparation for their career after schooling. The camp was held at SANNIDHI Pastoral Centre on Sagar Road, Shimoga.

Rev. Fr. Francis Serrao S J, Bishop of Shimoga, invited GRID to conduct sessions and has listed us among the list of resource persons for future programmes. Prof. Joselyn Lobo of GRID conducted seven sessions including self-motivation, effective communication, goal setting, personal growth, and career planning. The numerous volunteers at the camp helped in the participatory sessions.

Fr. Francis Fernandes, Principal of Sacred Heart PU College was the main coordinator and assisted by Fr. Karunesh and Fr. Paul as well as nuns from Mercy and other congregations.

2. Effective Communication and Presentation Skills

A two-day Workshop on Effective Communication and Presentation Skills was conducted for 17 seminarians both from Minor and Major Seminary of Shimoga Diocese on 24 & 25 April 2023. The training sessions were held in the Youth Centre adjacent to the Cathedral, one of the biggest in Asia.

The sessions mainly focusing on public speaking and presentation skills enabled each participant to make individual presentations on the topics of their choice both in Kannada and English. The other themes included listening, body language and written communication. The two-day programme was very much appreciated by the seminarians as expressed in their written feedback. Fr. Pius D’Souza, the Director of the Shimoga Diocese Commission for Vocation and Formation was the chief organiser of the programme. Prof. Joselyn Lobo of GRID was assisted by Joanne Lobo in conducting the sessions.

3. Social Work and Communication

A half-day session on Effective Communication focusing on social work was conducted for the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students of Kateel Ashok Pai Memorial College, Shimoga. The programme held on April 26, 2023 was organised by Dr. Sandhya Kaveri, Principal of the college under the aegis of JNANASUDHE, the Social Work Forum. The training session for the 35 students of the entire BSW course was covered by the local TV channel in their news bulletins.
